Greenmail

Definition:

A tactic used by companies to thwart activist investors by repurchasing their shares at a premium above market value, thereby incentivizing the activist to abandon their campaign and cease efforts to influence the company. Greenmail is often criticized as a form of capitulation to activist pressure.
